(Main points of reading)

  1. Skeptics come up with three arguments to the view that bees exist on Earth as early as 200 million years ago, which is supported by the discovery of very old fossil structures in Arizona that resemble bee nests.

  2. First, no fossil remains of actual bees have ever been found until 100 million years ago.

  3. Second, flowering plants are absent 200 million years ago considering bees’ close association with flowering plants.

  4. Third, the fossilized structures found in Arizona lacked some finer details, such as caps of bees’ nests, which suggested that they were made by other insects.

(Main points of the lecture)

  1. The skeptics’ arguments are not convincing.

  2. First, the reason that no fossil remains of actual bees 200 million years ago is the fact that bees cannot be preserved in a tree resin as fossils at that time, the trees with this resin were very rare then.

  3. Second, it’s quite possible that bees may have been feeding on non-flowering plants, which preceded the flowering ones. It means bees existed before flowering plants appeared on Earth.

  4. Third, it turned out fossilized chambers contained a same kind of waterproofing material as modern bees although they lack spiral caps.
