Reading material: Socialization
Socialization is the process by which individuals learn a world of meaning as the one and only way to view things and interpret their experiences. As individuals develop from infant to child to adult, they literally “learn their place”. Including the position involves receiving the necessary information and having opportunities to practice social roles. Networks of individuals and institutions act as agents of socialization that transmit all the knowledge individuals need to function as adults.

l In the listening passage, the professor defines several agents of socialization. Agents of socialization are people or institutions teaching you about the culture and rules. The first agents are your parents, who give you the first important lesson. Also, peers are different form your parents since your parents influence you over some long-term goals like career choice while your peers influence you over things like how you dress and what you do for fun. And your teachers are important because they teach you knowledge and serve as models of responsible people. Finally, clubs, religious groups, mass media, television, magazines and the internet---they also influence individuals.
