托福写作sea otter Decline题目练习
According to the lecture, the professor casts serious doubts on the article, claiming that rather than pollution, predation can better explain the sea otter decline along the Alaskan coast.
The first point retorted by the professor is the statement in the paragraphs indicating that industrial chemical pollutants indirectly cause the decline. She asserts the fact that no dead sea otter is discovered on Alaskan beaches directly contradicts the pollution hypothesis and strongly supports the predation theory-sea otter killed by predators would be eaten immediately rather than being washed up on shore. Thus, in contrast, predation theory makes more sense.
Secondly, as for the decline of other small sea mammals, the professor refutes that it can also be explained by the presence of predator-orcas, which probably start hunting small sea mammals, including seals, sea lions and sea otters, instead of whales that have disappeared due to human hunting. Therefore, the author’s viewpoint is flawed.
Finally, the professor believes the predation theory can better explain the uneven pattern of the decline than pollution hypothesis, because orcas, a type of large size whale, cannot access shallow or rocky areas, which are the exact locations where sea otters have not disappeared. By contrast, the author’s idea that uneven concentrations of pollutants caused by ocean currents and other environmental factors result in the uneven sea otter decrease seems unconvincing.
In sum, the author’s opinions toward sea otter decline are totally disproved by the professor.
