1.Which one of the factors do you think is the most important in terms of affecting the lasting time of friendship?
1)Always help each other
2)Have same interests and views on important things
3)Trust each other completely
A long-lasting friendship can define a person’s life. Where would Frodo Baggins be without Samwise Gamgee? What would Spongebob do without Patrick? And what defines a long-lasting friendship? Is it constant help, sharing interests or complete trust? I argue that when forging a long-lasting relationship, trust is the most important quality.
First off, trust is more important than simply helping each other. Will long-term friends help each other sometimes? Sure, but that isn’t what makes the friendship. For example, I had a classmate two years ago that struggled in math class. I’d often help him study for tests, but eventually I had to stop because it was taking away from my own study time. He got mad when I stopped, and that made me realize that he wasn’t really my friend. He was just using me. That experience made me realize that I couldn’t trust him anymore, and we never spent time together again after that.
Secondly, people don’t become good friends just because they share hobbies. I like soccer and I’ve met plenty of people while playing on soccer teams. However, I’m only still friends with one of those people. If the most important thing was shared interest, then I’d still be friends with lots of my former teammates. Besides, I think it’s actually good if friends have a variety of different interests. When my friends have different interests, it gives me an opportunity to learn about something new or try my hand at a different skill. Variety is the spice of life.
Finally, that leaves trust. Trust is the most important factor for forming a friendship that lasts. The only way you can feel completely comfortable with a person is if you trust them, and we remain friends with people that we feel comfortable with. Trust covers a lot of ground. It can be something simple, like making plans. If someone repeatedly cancels plans they’ve made with you, you’re not likely to stay friends with them for long. Trust can also be something more serious, like trusting someone to keep your secrets or trusting someone to give you honest criticism when you ask for advice.
In the end, there are many reasons that people hang out and there are many reasons that people become friends. However, there is only one foundation to every friendship that lasts throughout the years: trust. It’s nice when someone helps you and it’s nice when you share the same interests with someone, but trust is what makes a long-lasting friendship.
2.Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The most important problems affecting our society today could be solved within our lifetime.
As presented in the movie Tomorrow, the growth of human civilization has put our planet into great danger and disasters threaten to wipe human beings out. People start to attach great importance to the survival of the whole human race and solving these serious problems of the society has become the main concern. Some people argue that as long as people start to take actions now. It is not difficult to solve the problems in a short time. However, from my perspective, it is not quite possible to solve the most important problems of the society during my life time.
To begin with, some issues are just too complicated to find a solution quickly. For example, though the invention of the nuclear weapon has made it impossible to start another world war as what happened in the 20thcentury, regional wars have never stopped. The Arabic countries are fighting against the Israel, the anti-government groups in African countries are constantly trying to overthrow the governments, terrorists are aiming at civilians and want to establish their influence. All of those wars may not be able to stop within a century, since the reasons behind those wars are very complicated. People could be fighting for faith, money, power, etc. they will not stop until they feel satisfied. But people tend to be greedy.
Moreover, the current level of technology limits our hands. Environmental issues have been the hot topic for a while and various means have been attempted in order to save our only planet. For example, much fund has been devoted to the mission of finding clean energy to replace fossil fuels which are running out quickly and which have caused great pollution to the air and water. However, with the mission carried for decades, people are still not able to find one clean energy which can function as perfectly as coal or gas, which means unless the science and technology achieves great advance, it is likely that this mission will be still in progress next century.
Furthermore, it may take a long time to change people’s mindset. Currently, when people are choosing a school for their children or for themselves, they tend to choose one with good facilities, teachers and professors and at the same time, they would complain that the schools in their neighborhood may not satisfy this criteria. In addition, people in the remote areas may have to stand the school with average facilities and teachers. However, I cannot see this situation going to change any time soon, since good teachers and professors favor popular and prosperous places. Meanwhile, good teachers and professors tend to attract students, which means those school can get a good revenue to hire better teachers and professors. On the contrary, schools in backward places may get into a worse and worse situation. Unless, teachers change their way of thinking and are happy with whatever schools, this situation may not get improved.
Since the issues of the society are normally complicated, involving change people’s mindset and requiring advanced science, it is not really possible to solve those issues any time soon.
