“The Mysterious Landscapes of Hercules Segers”
The museum owns only one print by the seventeenth-century Dutch printmaker, but it has borrowed the Rijksmuseum’s entire Segers collection for this thrillingly comprehensive show. Segers was a master of precision in his black-and-white medium—looking at a giant oak you can almost hear the rustle of its leaves. But, unlike most of his contemporaries, Segers also printed in color, often altering the etching plates in the process.Seven versions of “The Enclosed Valley” illustrate how the artist could change day into night, orchoose one detail to catch the viewer’s eye, like a magician playing a card trick. Segers invented the etching technique known alternately as “lift-ground” or “sugar-lift,” which enabled him to paint directly on the printing plate instead of using a needle. Several examples here have the
delicate, soul-piercing clarity of a fine Chinese ink painting. Through May 21.

How to Transcend a Happy Marriage Sarah Ruhl has a wonderful way of hearing what
people can’t say even though they struggle to say it. Her latest play has many amusing moments, largely restricted to the first act, which soars. That’s when we meet George (an excellent Marisa Tomei), a middle-class mom whose husband and friends think they’re getting into a sexy situation with a free spirit named Pip (Lena Hall) and her two male partners, but it might all be in George’s mind. She wants to change her life, and the desire may have been so strong that she’s invented a scene where she and her stolid set lose control. The director, Rebecca Taichman, has cast the piece beautifully (Robin Weigert, whose befuddled matriarch is a comic gem, and Austin Smith merit special interest), but she can’t save the second act, which is filled with too much explication and not enough mystery. TSAR NICHOLAS CRADLES a rare albino coconut, a gift from the Sultan of Jub.
When no more specimens could be found, a crestfallen Nicholas secured,as substitutes, dozens of ostrich eggs from M. Fabergé, a Russo-French poultryman. The albino coconut was rendered another of history’s might-have-beens.
