  一:利用因果关系推断词意

  例1:C6T2P1:……and the staircase was dispensed with because Japanese pagoda did not have any practical use but became more of an art object.

  该句话中的be dispensed with这个词组对于完成文章后面的五题十分重要,但是很少有同学直接知道这个词组的含义。但是这个词组不难通过句子中的因果关系猜出其含义。原因状语从句中提到“因为日本的塔没有任何实际的用途而是更像是种艺术品”,所以可以推断出日本塔的staircase(楼梯)是不存在的。所以be dispensed with这出信息的意思自然就出来了。

  二:利用因果关系解题

  例2:C10T1P3——Q28:选择题

  Q28.James Watson suggests that he and Francis Crick won the race to discover the DNA code because they

  A were conscious of their own limitations

  B brought complementary skills to their partnership

  C were determined to outperform their brighter rivals

  D encouraged each other to realize their joint ambition

  这道题定位比较容易,用Francis Crick和Francis Crick可以轻易地定位到五段中的出题句。题干中给出的结果是“他们赢得了发现DNA密码的竞争”,通过because可以明显看出题目考察的是实现以上结果的原因,所以我们在解题时重点去关注原文中因果关系的重现即可。当原文中读到He said he and Crick had succeed because they were aware that they weren’t the most intelligent of the scientists pursuing the answer.这句的时候,雅思阅读因果关系以because的形式重现,所以这里肯定是题目的考点,从而确定正确答案应该是A

  例3:C8T1P2——Q20:判断题

  Q20.The FAA was created as a result of the introduction of the jet engine.

  原文:An accident that occurred in the skies over the Grand Canyon in 1956 resulted in the establishment of the Federal Aviation Administration(FAA)to regulate and oversee the operation of aircraft in the skies over the United States,which were becoming quite congested.

  这道题的题干和原文都出现了因果关系,通过阅读可以发现结果部分的“FAA成立”题干和原文中均有提及,但是原文中的原因“空中事故的发生”被换成了题干中的原因“喷气式飞机的出现”,所以原因部分出现不致导致题干与原文发生矛盾,判断结果为FALSE。
