Describe a new skill you learned that you think is important
You should say:
What it is
How you learned it
Whether it is difficult or not
And explain why you think it is important
An important skill which I recently learned is literature search(查找文献). Basically, it means investigating all published sources for information on a specific subject. The aim of the literature search is to find out authoritative(权威的) and trusted materials, use them to support your essay or other course works(课程作业), and most importantly, to avoid plagiarism(抄袭). I turned to my tutor for help and asked him to teach me some quick ways to search for documents. He told me that in order to find out useful documents, you needed to search certain keywords in professional academic databases. The Common search engine won’t help. After learning some of the important steps from my tutor, I tried with my classmates to collect essays, both from databases in China and from abroad, because we wanted to cover more areas as much as possible. The learning process was not that easy, because we had to read so many materials that made us a headache. And among all those documents I must pick out the most enlightening(具启发性的) ones. I think the literature search is both useful and significant for a student’s academic career. After acquiring it, I successfully finished my class paper before the deadline. The tutor praised me for selecting materials from the most authoritative database and using them wisely. Besides, if you want to pursue advanced studies(深造), then the literature search is a basic skill for you. The earlier you learn it, the easier it will be for you to organize and write your own essays.
